Petraria is an investigation
project active since 2021 at expresses itself in the debate on the
potential of new strategic perspectives for living and for the usability
of places for collective use and sociality.
Through the focus on perceptive enhancement, Petraria
intends to disseminate the theme of the analysis of urban spaces in the
so-called inland areas. (Agenzia per la Coesione Territoriale, 2014).
The
field of investigation to date has covered the municipalities of Novara
di Sicilia, Polizzi Generosa, Petralia Soprana, Roccavaldina and
Monforte San Giorgio, located in the Sicilian region between Palermo and
Messina at an altitude ranging from 300 to 1100 m ASL. The research was
based on a detailed description of the territory under examination,
considering its perceptive, historical, and cultural aspects.. The
surveys explored the describable aspects of urban space as well as the
open elements of public community relations. The observation focuses on
the places where people meet, where they exchange reciprocal links,
which therefore become the places of relationships: courtyards, open
common areas, walkways, in general those places that over time have had
functions in the social life of communities and are characterised by a
peculiar anthropological identity.
We
wanted to dwell on the inseparable link between identity - which is the
bearer of a defined rooted cultural system - and the relationship of
this with the surrounding area. This means identifying in the
interconnections between historical cultural heritage and the
perceptive-sound environment, the recognition of the essence of places.
An objective pursued with workshops involving local communities that
cross-reference recordings, guided listening, sound walks, describing
the multiple perception useful to represent places. Petraria is today an
open project that identifies perceptive enhancement as the shared basis
for facilitate and test the adoption of sustainable strategies of local
promotion and development, verifying for each village, according to its
peculiarities, opportunities and criticalities. A further tool in the
co-management of administrations and communities for the shared
recognition of the perceived narrative of common goods and collective
spaces that can be the object of urban regeneration.
