Radio Gruve 7, the northern most FM broadcasting
Radio Gruve 7
As part of the photo exhibition: INNE I VERDEN / INSIDE THE WORLD: the Last Miners of Longyearbyen
which opened at the Spitsbergen Kunstnerserter / Artist Center, Vei 100.2 Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway,
I presented the installation
Sound Reactivation: Radio Gruve7 FM 100.2
which uses audio recordings I made inside Gruve 7 / Mine 7, at the end of May 2025, a few weeks before its closure.
At the same time, the Gruve 7 Radio Station, FM 100.2,
was activated and will broadcast in an area of about one kilometre
around the Spitsbergen Kunstnersenteret, Vei 100.2, until June 30, 2025,
when Gruve 7 / Mine 7, the last active mine in Longyearbyen, and last
norvegian Svalbard mine will will be permanently closed.
During its activity, Radio Gruve7 FM 100.2
will be the northernmost FM broadcaster. A possible reactivation after
30 June 2025 will be discussed as a lasting tribute to over a century of
coal mining.
Sound reactivation: Inne I Verden is the latest chapter in my Sound Reactivation project, which uses sounds to (re)activate abandoned, hidden, invisible, disused, inaccessible places through sound.
With
this chapter I go on developing the concept of ambiance specificity; in
this perspective, I have chosen a small power radio broadcast that
delimits and limits the possibility of fruition to the specific time and
space coordinates of an ambiance, to the “Hic et nunc”, the here and
now of any real event and not to the simulacrum of the virtual.
